What is the Gospel?

Simply put, the Gospel is good news.

We were created perfect but our ancestors and now us have fallen as we set our deepest affections on anything but God. This is sin because we owe God our creator our love and affection and we have chosen to chase other lovers. Despite this God continues to give us air to breathe, food to eat and life to enjoy.

So we continue to live and even though we know our imperfections and infidelity, we trick ourselves into thinking we are good enough to know God. The good news is that perfection, a faithful relationship with the creator of the universe is found not in ourselves but in Jesus Christ.

Like a loving father, God desired to reunite us with Him. He walked this earth as a man, Jesus Christ, at an actual point in history. Jesus was a perfect man, he loved God and humanity with all his fibre but despite this was unjustly executed. As Jesus was also fully God, death could not hold him, he rose back to life three days later securing salvation for the rest of humanity. As Jesus died he suffered the wrath that should’ve been directed against us for misplaced affection. In so doing Jesus paid for all the sin of those who would believe.

The Gospel is the message that despite our failings, our indifference to God and our sin, there is a saviour. Out of immense love, Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice to show God’s glory and grace, to reunite all those who trust in him with their creator.

“Come to me, all you who are struggling hard and carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest.  Put on my yoke, and learn from me. I’m gentle and humble. And you will find rest for yourselves.  My yoke is easy to bear, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
